August 26, 2009

The day has finally arrived, Ben starts 1st grade. He's gone from very excited about starting a new school, to getting more and more nervous as the big day arrived.

Ben looked so grown up leaving the house, with his backpack

He got out of the car looking very apprehensive, but trying very hard to look cool, calm and collected.

He was the first kid at school (for his class), which worked out great, he got to find his name-tag and hang up his backpack.

...and then check out his classroom. Of course Jonathan was right with Ben the whole time, he even insisted on taking a backpack to school.

Wednesday is a half day at school, I'd taken the day off work so I could meet him from school. He came out of his class looking shell-shocked, we checked out the clubhouse - which was completely overwhelming to him. It had been a long morning for Ben - so many new things and he didn't know any of the other kids. In the car he was quiet....he eventually told me what the problem was - and it was my fault. Apparently every single other kid at school had taken a snack for morning recess, except Ben (I had no idea he was supposed to have a snack). When I said "I don't think every kid took one, because some of the kids from his class didn't even have a backpack with them" his response "NO MOM, EVERY KID HAD A SNACK" - ooooops.

The next day I made sure he not only had a snack with him, but he got to pick what he would have - he chose a peanut granola bar...it was packed in his lunchbox along with his lunch. Thursday night "Ben, did you eat a snack at morning recess" "yes" "did you have the granola bar" "nope, I ate my sandwich instead" - aaaggghhh, so, that meant, for lunch he had a granola bar, a Go-Gurt and a box of raisins.
